Book Review:The Tube Amp Book

Cover Shot, The Tube Amp Book

"The Tube Amp Book" is the classic book on tube amp repair by the founder of Groove Tubes, Aspen Pittman. This has been the quintessential reference manual for guitar amp shops since the first edition in 1986. The book is now available in a "deluxe revised version" from Amazon at a substantial discount. I have not seen this edition but I own the 4th edition of the original and it has been well used.

The book begins with a brief history of guitar amps and a retrospective of some of the classic makes and models. My edition contains promotional chapters for groove tubes but with the recent sale of the company to Fender, I do not know if the new edition contains the chapters on groove tubes philosophy. I do know that the numerous pages of vintage guitar amp schematics and vacuum tube data sheets make the book worth the price. This book could be your sole tube amp reference book in your shop, although it would not be my first choice if I had to chose one. I would still choose "A Desktop Guide to Hip Vintage Guitar Amps" by Gerald Weber if I could only choose one. Luckily, I did not have to choose and they both found frequent use when I had my shop in SoCal.
